REVIEW: Alfred Hitchock’s 39 Steps

Alfred Hitchcock's 39 Steps

The latest Broadway Across America Presentation in Cincinnati, Alfred Hitchcock's 39 Steps

This will be a short review.  For one, I am too busy to craft a lengthy treatise on why this show was good and funny and two, it wasn’t THAT good or funny.

I know Connie didn’t enjoy it.  I was wearing a listening device during the first half because I can never hear very well at the Aronoff, so I wasn’t able to tell if Connie was laughing with the rest of the audience or not.  I did find out at intermission what she thought when she announced that this show was “terrible.”  HA!

I liked it.  I thought it was cute.  There were some good gags and I like this kind of stupid humor – when I understand whats going on.  I will tell you that without the listening device during the 2nd half (I took it back at intermission in case we wanted to leave early) I couldn’t always tell what was being said by the 4 actors, but what I did comprehend was harmless fun.  I don’t know that I’m dying to see it again, though I was impressed with the staging and the creativity of having these four actors play all these different characters throughout the show.

Anyway, I give it a solid B.  Connie, I think would say D- bordering on F, but I hate to speak for her (though since she doesn’t have a blog, I will! HA!)

American Idol Results

These four got sent home?!

I’m agitated tonight.  The choices America made are stupid, short sighted, and tasteless.  Tim Urban, for instance, is the worst contestant this season – yet he’s still there.  Paige Miles can’t sing her way through anything and yet she’s there.  Meanwhile, Lilly and Alex who have two very distinct voices are gone.  Katelyn Epperly is a talented keyboardist and singer and she’s going home.  Toddrick, who could bring some real entertainment to this show this, goes bye bye.  But we’re keeping Andrew Garcia?  We’re keeping Katie Stevens?  I just don’t get it.  I hope the country understands that when the theme shows suck because all these contestants and boring and sing predictable crap, it is all their fault.

I’m going to watch The Office now.

American Idol Top 8 Boys

Lee Dwyze – C+ – Better tonight, but still way overrated.

Alex Lambert – A- – I loved this, but at times he sounded nasally.

Tim Urban – B+ – Much improved, but he’s still weak.

Andrew Garcia – A- – I really enjoyed this much more than his last couple.

Casey James – A – I’ve been hard on Casey but this was good.

Aaron Kelly – B+ – He did a nice job and at his age he shows good promise.  By the way, Simon gets an A+ for shutting Kara up and realizing what they’re doing to these kids with their stupid advice.

Toddrick Hall – A – I thought this was great.

Mike Lynche – B+ – I thought it was too over the top but I do like that he’s shown so many different styles, though.  I’m not sure it was as good as the judges say, but it was good.

Going home:  On the boys, it’ll be tough.  I wish it was Lee, but it probably won’t be.  I guess Tim and Andrew or Aaron will probably go.  For last night’s review, listen to the archived podcast at kirksheppard.com . . . but bye bye to Katie and Paige, most likely, though I hate to admit I was wrong about Katie winning the whole thing . . .

Day Three: Le Cellier and Who Knows What!

I woke up a little later than I did yesterday, but still had plenty of time. There was already a bit of a line of people wanting to go to Epcot at the bus stop and we waited for about 10 minutes before the bus came.

After we disembarked, I already knew I was in for a long day as my feet hurt and I was having trouble walking very fast. Luckily I wasn’t in any hurry.

The kept us behind the turnstiles until about 5 til 9. Then they let us in the park and I began a picture taking frenzy of the topiaries of Donald, Goofy, and Daisy camping and fishing. They’re really great and HUGE! I even had a photopass guy take my picture with my iPhone, though he wasn’t thrilled with it.

I walked in and decided to ride Spaceship Earth since there was no line and it was open. After this, I headed in to get my picture taken with Mickey. Then, I walked over to The Land for breakfast. I had a chocolate crossaint and chocolate milk to tide me over until lunch.

I then rode Living with the Land and noticed they are putting a coy pond in the greenhouse. Not sure why, but its pretty.

After this, I rode Journey into Imagination with Figment and it is harmless, though obviously doesn’t hold a candle to the original. After I rode this I sat and watched the jumping water for awhile before heading towards more beautiful flowers that needed their picture taken.

I took a family photo of a young couple in front of the American Gothic topiary and then asked them to take one of me, which seemed to put the princess out a bit.

Whatever, take the picture, honey. Then you and your emasculated husband can continue spending his money around the World Showcase Lagoon.

I then headed to Canada where I took more pictures and waited patiently for Le Cellier to open. I checked in about 11:15 and was seated about 11:35, which was 10 minutes before my reservation time.

The waiter was good; he knew I’d been there before and didn’t need to tell me everything about the place or the menu. The Coke tasted like Diet and he confirmed something was weird but didn’t know what it was or how to fix it. It wasn’t terrible so I drank it. I had a bowl of Cheddar Cheese soup (with plenty of pretzel bread to dip in it) and the New York Strip Steak. Both were great, though I will say that the steak didn’t look very appealing. I’m not sure what was up with the color, but it just didn’t look like what I think a steak should look like. It was very tasty though and cooked perfectly, as always.

After lunch, I headed back to the front of the park and went towards the Animal Kingdom. I have a friend who works at the park and in order to keep him from getting in trouble that’s all I’ll say about that. He was able to get away from his duties for a few minutes to speak to me and it was nice to see him.

I walked back to Flights of Wonder and decided to face my bird-phobia again by watching this very entertaining and educational show. Its hilarious and informative and the I knew where to sit as to not be attacked by any birds. So, all was good.

After the show, I went back to the Wildlife Express to see Rafiki’s Planet Watch. What a neat place; I wish there were more things going on that I was interested in. I did get to see a couple of people working on fixing a turtle’s broken shell, which was neat. Another cast member gave a talk about an baby alligator she was holding. I was really tired so I wanted to go back to the room.

It is a long walk from Africa to the exit and then to the bus stop. We didn’t wait long for a bus, thankfully. I laid down for a few minutes and recharged and decided to end my night at the Magic Kingdom since it was open til 10.

I had to stand on the bus ride over because it was so busy. I already knew I was in trouble. I walked in and it was packed. I waited in line at Casey’s while the girl behind the counter took an order and then filled it. And then she took another one and filled it. Then she got some help, so common sense says she’d take an order and let the girl fill it while she took another order. BUT I chose this line so of course this girl took an order and then stood there while her friend filled the order. Doing nothing. Just waiting. Staring into space. Occassionally joking with another cast member. My patience was waning.

I got my hot dog and couldn’t find a place to eat it. I finally found a concrete pillar about 100 yards from the restaurant and was able to scarf down the delicious hot dog before stopping to listen to the ragtime piano player for a bit. Then I headed to Adventureland, where I walked through the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse. I hadn’t been up here for years. I doubt I’ll ever go back unless they make it into something else. Too much climbing, too confined, and too boring.

I then watched the Enchanted Tiki Bird show. Its so bizarre and I enjoy watching the other people’s reactions to the craziness of singing tiki poles and Gloria Estafan music.

I headed into Frontierland and grabbed a spot for Spectromagic, but there were these two obnoxious little girls who’s parents paid no attention to that kept stepping on me and kicking me and generally causing me irritation. So, I got up and walked back to Adventureland looking for a Dole Whip Float.

Of course I found one. And I ate it. And I loved it.

I was really tired and thought I better head back to the resort before I was so tired I couldn’t move at all. I fought my way up Main Street and was fascinated about the number of people still coming in with only 2 hours left, but I guess on a Saturday night that makes sense. I had to stand on the bus again and it seemed like it took forever to get back to the room.

I finally got back in the room and literally had to lay on the bed for 10 minutes before I even had the ability to get up and pack. I need to rethink my shoes.

Oh! I forgot to mention this yesterday in the report and it really is pretty funny. I decided on this trip due to the weather and because I really like these black slacks I bought, I was going to dress more business casual than normal. Usually I’m in shorts at Disney but its cold so I’d be in jeans. But not this trip.

So, I wore black slacks and a nice long sleeved shirt and my new leather jacket. And I was stopped no less than 8 times yesterday by other guests asking where the bathroom was or other questions. I always politely told them that I didn’t work there but I could probably help them. Some of them were embarrassed. Others were mildly apologetic.

But one woman was angry with me. Essentially she told me that I shouldn’t dress like that if I didn’t work there and she harumphed her way off into the sunset. I did manage to tell her where an imaginary bathroom was that I hope she spent at least 5 minutes looking for.

Don’t mess with me.

So, the Magical Express departs for me at 6:15 AM. I’m sure I’ll be checking in on Facebook and twitter yet tomorrow at the airport. I genuinely appreciate all of your comments and kind words throughout this trip. While I don’t get lonely on these solo trips, it has felt like all of you were with me on this journey and that did make it better. Thanks!

Day Two: My ACTUAL Birthday!

I woke up about 7 in a fantastic mood and was ready to head to the Magic Kingdom. The bus was actually pretty crowded, which I was surprised about given how early it was but several folks it seemed went to the Contemporary or Polynesian for breakfast. After the always entertaining opening show (this time it was the Mayor who did the honors) we all headed into the park.

I was surprised about the number of people who must have taken my advice from last year and got breakfast at the bakery. In all honesty, I think last year the actual Bakery was under refurbishment and people weren’t interested in the other options next door in the ice cream parlor. I had a gigantic cinnamon roll and found a nice quiet spot next to Uptown Jewlers underneath the “vocal lessons.” I finished up before the Keys to the Kingdom tour came by but just in the nick of time. I decided to go to Tomorrowland and ride the Tomorrowland Transit Authority.

It was kind of chilly! After this, I walked through some of the stores and headed to Mickey’s Philharmagic. I encountered a nice young family here on their first visit and they had lots of questions. I gave them some short term guidance for the rest of their morning and wished them well.

I decided to go sit in front of the castle and watch the Dream Along with Mickey show for the first time. I’ve seen it as I’ve walked past, but I’ve never actually WATCHED it. Its exactly what a castle show should be – cheesy singing and dancing featuring Mickey and friends, some princesses, and other Disney classic characters.

After it was over, I headed to the Plaza where I had reservations. I was disappointed that the front facade was under construction so there were no views of the castle. Actually, there was no natural light at all. Oh well. I had a burger and fries and the nice waiter (who was trying to hard) was kind enough to bring me a cupcake. He also decided to announce to the entire restaurant that I was dining alone and needed them all to sing to me. This was embarrassing but whatever. It did involve a free cupcake so no harm no foul. I do hope he wouldn’t announce that a lady was traveling alone, though, because that could be a safety issue. Not being sexist, but lets be realistic – no attacker, especially a Disney one, would target me. Right?

After lunch, I walked over to Pirates but it was down for “technical difficulties.” I walked through the shop in honor of Connie and then checked back and indeed the ride was back open. I walked right on.

Then I walked through Frontierland and browsed the pin store. Didn’t see anything I was dying to have so I walked back up to Main Street. My feet were beginning to hurt and I could feel my brain start fading so I took a bus back to the hotel for a quick break. Given the mass amount of people trying to get into the Magic Kingdom at noon, I think I made a good choice to get out when I did.

I was only at the hotel for about 90 minutes before I decided to go to the Studios and spend some time there. I got to the Studios and the Streetsmophere characters preparing the crowd for the Block Party Bash. I went to scope the line for a photo op with Mickey and it was crowded. I was also surprised at the lack of other characters in the building. Frozone was finishing his set and the Up characters were on break, but usually Pluto or Pinnochio or someone else is in the building. There was no one around.

I decided to go see the Prince Caspian attraction; what a waste. At least with the Lion, Witch, Warddrobe featured a live performer. This was just video clips in a big room with a broken stone table in the way of the exit. Oh well, live and learn.

I was hungry so I went to the ABC Commissary and ordered the great Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich they have – without the garden or the Bleu Cheese. It took forever, but when it came it was good and hot and fresh and tasted great dipped in the BBQ sauce.

After this, I watched Voyage of the Little Mermaid, followed by the 5:00 showing of American Idol, and then I made it in time for the 5:30 showing of Indiana Jones. The park closed at 7 so I decided to go to Epcot via the boat. I had to stand from DHS to the Swan, but after that the boat cleared out and I was able to sit. I walked around the France Pavillion and didn’t know there was so much there I’d not seen. I then was able to catch the last few minutes of Jose Feliciano’s set. He and the band sounded great and I wish I had gotten there earlier or a little later so I could have heard more of that set or his next but I was too tired and cold to stand in line and wait for the next show.

I walked around the World Showcase and took some photos and just relaxed. I was super tired and my left foot was starting to get a blister so I decided to head to the bus. Epcot’s bus station is massive and the Pop Century stop is so far away. I debated taking another cab but though I’d tough it out.

I got to the bus stop and there wasn’t a big crowd, which was good. And then I saw an elderly couple in dueling motorized scooters racing for the line. I rolled my eyes, because I knew the bus would have to load them both up first and I wanted to sit down.

And then the older lady tipped her scooter over.

So, luckily they didn’t make it in time for the bus to even load them up.

OK, that’s terrible. I went over to help along with several other men and we picked her up and she said she was OK. This incident reminded me of the baffling fact that there are NO cast members anywhere around at these bus stops until a bus comes. There should have been a report taken at the very least or a medic called to check her out. I told our bus driver when he pulled up what happened and he went over and talked to the woman, but that just didn’t seem good enough. There should be a cast member or security or something within 100 feet of guests at all times and I’m going to email Disney about this later.

I got back to the hotel and really wanted something to eat but the food court was packed. So, I got some pretzels out of the vending machine and downed a Cherry Coke before writing this report and then going to bed.

Tomorrow: Lunch at Le Cellier and no other agenda . . .we’ll see where the day takes me!

Day One Continued

And we weren’t the first stop.  We were the second, though.  I was so ready to get off that bus. I’m not sure what it was but I was getting more car sick than normal.

I walked into the Pop Century and there was not a soul checking in anywhere. The nice Chinese girl at the online check-in counter had me taken care of in about 30 seconds. The longest part was giving me my birthday button and having me write my name on it.  There was also not a soul in the Concierge line so I was able to get my dining reservations printed quickly.  I walked to my room, which is in the 1970′s section.  This is my favorite section of the resort and my room opens out into a giant foosball table. I’m on the corner next to the giant Big Wheel. I’m loving it.

I wanted to try to go to the Animal Kingdom before it closed and try to catch Festival of the Lion King at least before my 5:45 dinner reservations at Boma.  The bus took forrrrrrever to arrive, but when it did it was me and a nice family with a cute little girl named Grace.

As we tried to disembark the bus, these idiots were standing in the way and wouldn’t move.  So, me – being Ted Miller’s grandson (trust me, if you knew him you’d understand) got them to move with a little assertiveness.  I was polite at first but things got a little ugly quickly.

There were about 15 in their party basically lined up in the wrong direction and therefore blocking the exit for me and the nice family I shared a bus with. After I asked the first time and was greeted with blank sneers I pushed through and explained that the line was over to my right and the old man said “Excuse me, sir, but you are wrong.” His hoochie mama daughter said something about “he’s so big, yada yada.”  I’m not sure what her point was but in this particular argument, my size was irrelevant, stupid, and most of all obvious. I stopped, pointed to the guard rail that was between me and the Animal Kingdom, therefore preventing me from going his way (for safety reasons as it was used by the buses) and I started to explain this in simple yet sarcastic English. Then the cast member confirmed I was right and made them all move while I smiled and walked on. Happy Birthday to me!

I was pretty hungry so I had some breadsticks at Pizzafari and sat to wait for the parade.  I was too late to get a very good spot staked out and quickly got tired of the palm tree scratching my neck and the guy in front of me moving around so much that I walked back to Camp Minnie-Mickey to line up for the last showing of FotLK.

The show was as good as always and I think these four main singers may have been the best overall group that I’ve heard.  By the time the show let out, the park was technically closed so I – along with everyone else -headed towards the exit.  I lined up for the bus to Animal Kingdom Lodge and set off for Boma.

I had to stand and the bus stopped at the new Kadani Village first.  Once we got to Jambo House, I got off and walked in through the gift shop just like old times.  I miss staying here.

I checked into Boma and was seated promptly.  Gilbert, my server, explained how things worked and got me a Coke.  I ate lots of good things and even tried some new stuff.  I had some salad and tried the apple vinagrette dressing. It was pretty tasty, but I’m not a salad dressing person.  I had the strip loin of beef, which was seasoned with African flavors, and put some of their special BBQ sauce on it.  It was great!  So was the chicken.  I even tried salmon, which I would never ever do because I really don’t like seafood.  It was very mild, but tasted like fish (duh) and so I didn’t eat much of it.

The desserts were plentiful and I had some peanut butter mousse, some caramel cheesecake, and some banana bread pudding with vanilla sauce.  My server brought me out a plate of special desserts for my birthday including a macaroon, some sort of peanut butter pastry, an apple spice thing, and a Guava flavored gumdrop.  That was very nice of special of them.

I didn’t feel like taking a bus to a park and then back to the hotel so I hailed a cab and spent the $12 fare back to the hotel.  I’m going to watch Idol and/or The Office and then go to bed.  Tomorrow its the Magic Kingdom and probably Disney’s Hollywood Studios . . . but who knows!

I have arrived!

So, the flight got in a little early. It was not bad and I had an exit row seat, which is always helpful. I watched Episode 1 of Dexter and I’m not exactly sure what I think yet. I also watched an episode of a show called “Better off Ted” and it was surprisingly funny.,

I had to wait about 15 minutes for a Magical Express bus and now we’re on our way to the Pop Century. I’m not sure if we’re the first stop, but I sure hope so.

Why I Choose Disney

The other day someone asked me (and its certainly not an uncommon question) why I go to Disney so often. “Isn’t there anywhere else you’re interested in seeing?” I’m asked frequently.

So, while I don’t feel like I need to defend myself at all, I would like to share with you this morning just a couple of the many reasons why I frequent Disney World as often as I do.

One, its convenient. A two hour flight to a place that I know how to navigate well that doesn’t require me to drive is a great vacation option. Its low stress for me because I know it so well. If I were to go somewhere new (and I do have vague plans for trips in the future to Las Vegas, New York City, and Washington DC) I would be anxious about all the details and transportation and so on. That doesn’t mean I won’t go do that, but especially on a 3 day jaunt like this one, the lack of anxiety is helpful.

Secondly, its relatively cheap for me. Just like Costco and Sam’s Club, the way I do Disney (in volume) is cheaper for me. I have an annual pass, which will expire in September. It cost around $500. A 4 day pass is close to $250. So, if I go for 8 days a year I’ve paid for the trip. Not only that, but I get significant discounts on hotel rooms because of having the AP, which brings the price down again. Add in dining discounts and a vast knowledge of how to have fun here on a budget because of my experience, its a low-cost option for me.

Finally, I love it. In my job, I hear a lot of emotional and often sad stories. One of the many ways I cope with that is to escape to a fantasy world where everyone is happy and joyous. I love it at Disney; I truly do. The little kid who lives in my heart embraces the magic in a way that many of you unfortunately can’t understand. I wish you could. You’re missing out.

So, there’s just a few of the reasons I choose Disney World. And I will continue to do so mainly because I can.

A little after 4AM…

It’s a little after 4AM and I’m having trouble sleeping. I’m so excited about getting to Disney World and starting the fun! I’ve got a very small agenda; three dinner reservations to work around. I’ll be at Boma tonight at the Animal Kingdom, the Plaza Restaurant at the Magic Kingdom tomorrow for my birthday lunch, and Le Cellier for lunch on Saturday. Obviously I have to go to Magic Kingdom tomorrow and Epcot on Saturday but how long I stay at each and when I head to the Studios or another park is completely undecided. I’m loving not feeling tied to a schedule or obligated to do or see anything. Its going to be a trip full of spontaentity and experiencing new things… and yes, even after 17 trips, there are still new thing to be explored! Stay tuned for more later . . . I’m going to try to go back to bed.

Disney Trip March 2010 – The Night Before

I left the office around 6:00 and headed to Indianapolis where I had reservations at the La Quinta near the airport.  I found a great rate at Expedia.com and this hotel offers free parking and a hotel shuttle to the airport – so the room really was very very cheap.  Its also very clean and I’m very happy with it.

I’ll get up tomorrow, get a nice start, and fly out at 11:20 AM.  I’ve already checked into the flight AND to my hotel room so tomorrow SHOULD be a breeze.  I should be at the Animal Kingdom (if that’s where I end up deciding to go when I get there) by 3:00 at the very latest.

Stay tuned to Facebook and Twitter for frequent updates and photos throughout my birthday trip.  Tomorrow night I’ll be eating dinner at Boma, an African buffet, at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.  Stay tuned for more!
